The Mar Azul : communication to involve and educate is promoted by the University of Aveiro, through the Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro, and is financed by the Fundo Azul a financial incentive mechanism of the General Directorate of Sea Policy of the Ministry of the Sea.

This project aims to raise awareness and knowledge about marine and coastal issues. It aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Oceans and Seas, raise awareness to the duty of conserving Natural Heritage, through behavior change, as well as promote the scientific and technological culture of the Ocean among schoolchildren (students and teachers) and the general public. The project thus intends to encourage the involve citizens in the themes of the Sea and Coastal Zones, in order to meet the seven Essential Principles on the scientific culture of the Ocean, as proposed by the Ocean Literacy initiative, actively involving the school and local community, the scientific community, the business sector of the sea, municipalities and professionals in the sea economy.

In order to promote a culture of respect for the Ocean and drive the construction of a bluer society, this project is based on three lines of action that involve the following themes:

- Marine garbage

- Valuing and sustainability of marine resources

- coastal erosion

Part of the activities programmed for this project will be developed in the region of Lagos, through a partnership with the Lagos Ciência Viva Science Centre.

Thus, we propose to promote the following activities within the scope of the Mar Azul:

Field Trips: Field trips to show in practice and on the ground the potential of the Ocean and the importance of preserving biodiversity.

Beach Cleaning Activities: Beach cleaning activities with classes from 2 schools. The objective is to make the school community aware of the amount of garbage found on the beaches and suggest activities that can be done with the garbage collected

Lectures: Doing 4 lectures in secondary schools about the themes of the oceans, in particular marine litter, the sustainability of fishing and the potential of the oceans for other industries. These lectures are intended to raise awareness of issues associated with the oceans, but also to show the scientific research that is developed around the issues associated with the sea.

Science Caffé: It is intended to invite 4 researchers to address issues such as marine litter, fishing sustainability and the potential of the oceans for other industries.

Round Table: Conducting consultation activities with the general population on the problem of fishing and marine litter.

Science as a Family: Carrying out activities for recycling and reusing materials in order to promote habits of sustainability and raise awareness of the problem of marine litter.
